Domains extension: A Simple Guide

Domains extension has specific meanings and by checking these extensions you should be able to determine what the website is all about. Generally speaking, there are three main kinds of domain extensions – .org, .com and .net. As many of you probably know, .com is a domain extension which was created for businesses or general commercial purpose. Today, this is the most used and most popular extension. On the other hand, .net was designed for network while .org is used by organizations. Keep in mind that the latter is used by trade organizations as well as by non-profit organizations. In addition, .net is used for businesses associated with the Internet. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t register a domain name with an extension like this even if you are not part of these areas.

Some other popular examples of domain extensions include .mobi, .info, .biz and .us. Each of them has a specific meaning and that’s why you must rest assured that you know what they mean before you opt for any of them. For example, .us is a geographical extension which obviously stands for the United States. .biz is an extension that is used by small businesses. .info is usually used by news sites and websites that are sharing a different kind of information. .mobi is for mobile device sites.

We have already mentioned the .us domain extension, but we would like to point out that there are many other country specific extensions. In fact, every independent country, as well as some independent territories, have their own domain extensions. .ca is for Canada, .de is for Germany, .jp for Japan and so on. What’s interesting is that country specific domain extensions consist of two letters.

Some other popular domains extension options include .edu. As some of you may have already guessed, .edu is used by educational organizations and agencies mostly by college-level institutions in the United States. .gov is used by government agencies and institutions across the world. Obviously, ordinary people and private organizations can’t register a domain name with an extension that ends in .gov.

The number of websites is growing on a daily basis which means that more and more domain names are getting registered. One of the ways to let people get more chances of registering the domain name they want is by introducing more domain extensions.
